101st
Annual Meeting and Exposition The American Ceramic Society started setting the pace
for the next century of ceramics at the 101st Annual Meeting
and Exposition, April 25-28, 1999, in Indianapolis. Trisha Zellner ACerS Traveling Exhibit
Makes its Magical Debut in Columbus The ACerS Centennial Traveling Ceramics Exhibit, "The
Magic of Ceramics," came to Columbus, Ohio, in celebration
of the Society's Centennial. Kathy Martin
Profiles in Ceramics: Carol M. Jantzen
A Woman Ahead of Her Time Carol M. Jantzen is an advisory scientist at the Savannah
River Technology Center at the Westinghouse Savannah River
Site. She has accomplished much within the nuclear industry,
especially in terms of disposing defense waste generated during
World War II and the Cold War into glass. The crowning glory
of Jantzen's career is to have developed the statistical process
control models that currently operate the first high-level
waste vitrification facility in the United States, which also
is the largest facility in the world. Kathy L. Woodard
ACerS Corporate Environmental Achievement Award-
Emissions to Air from the Glass Industry Winner of the 1999 ACerS Corporate Environmental Achievement
Award, Pilkington plc has developed a 'Best Available Technique'
for the reduction of nitrogen oxides from regenerative furnaces. Derek Norman and Ian Shulver
Environmental Optimization of Flux Additions The addition of different fluxes in the traditional ceramic
synthesis of uvarovite garnet green color has been environmentally
optimized to diminish atmospheric emissions and leaching of
toxic substances in washing waters while maintaining a good
color yield. Mario Llusar, J. Antonio Badenes, Javier Calbo,
M. Ángeles Tena and Guillermo Monrós
Energy Use and Efficiencies in Firing Ceramics, Melting Glass The energy consumption of 45 kilns and furnaces and their
efficiencies were compared with previous data. Many cases
indicate improvements as a result of furnace design, use of
oxygen and new refractories. O.J. Whittemore
Coverings '99 Unveils Styles, Trends The latest styles and trends in ceramic tile were revealed
at Coverings '99, the largest trade show for ceramic tile
and natural stone in the Western Hemisphere. Christine J. Polas
VAMAS After Twelve Versailles Advanced Materials and Standards project has
helped spread awareness of new testing and characterization
methods around the world. A short overview of the 12 projects
and the lessons learned about conducting international round
robins. George Quinn
High-Temperature Properties of Refractory Composites High-temperature properties have been studied for oxide-nonoxide
composites. Results indicate superior hot strength over carbon-bonded
materials, an increase in shock resistance (nonoxide added
to oxide matrix) and an improvement in oxidation resistance
(oxide added to nonoxide matrix). Xiangchong Zhong and Hailei Zhao
